“One secret of success in life is for a man to be ready for his opportunity when it comes.”

Benjamin Disraeli (1804-1881)

Every day a new internet marketing technique comes along claiming to be “the next big thing” in search engine optimization technology. But you really have to sort out what exactly is the best opportunity for your particular web site or online business will be to get that much sought after 1 million hits per month goal . Google the term “search engine optimization,” and you’ll find more than 7 million results, far too many to examine every one of them and trying to figure out which one will work for you, so what do you do now?

Greg Boser, owner and operator of the web marketing outfit “WebGuerilla”, will do anything possible to manipulate the search engine rankings for his clients.”The search engines created the monster,” he said. “It only exists because Google’s algorithm places a lot of emphasis on link popularity.” That “link popularity” term has gotten a lot of media attention lately mainly because it is a way to break through the barriers that Google and other search engines have put up against small online businesses and blog sites that need to find a way to position themselves on the top 20 category listings for their business or blog site category.

You need a decent grasp of how links work in search engine optimization to understand how to use link popularity to your benefit. In essence, Google interprets a link from page A to page B as a vote, by page A, for page B. But, Google looks at more than the sheer volume of votes, or links a page receives; it also analyzes the page that casts the vote. Votes cast by pages that are themselves ‘important’ weigh more heavily and help to make other pages ‘important.’

These links from other pages connected to yours MUST have real value to them. You have to make sure that the pages you have linked to are relevant to your own website, otherwise when the spiders and robots examine your page content and they are not relevant at all to Page A, then they will not let your Page B get listed at all! Not a good thing for your overall internet marketing plan success. Let’s start with linking as the beginning of this top ten list now that you understand how crucial it is to your main goal of building large amounts of traffic to your site.

1. LINKING A lot of big internet marketing firms use linking as their main weapon against the major search engines today. They are able to manipulate Google and Yahoo! by submitting any page from your site to as many pages as possible that have to do with your main keywords on that particular page. The amount of quality on the pages you are linked to are as important as the quantity of the pages.

“I could create a blank page without a keyword anywhere present, or a 404 error message, and if I can get enough sites to link to it, I could get it to place first on Google,” Boser said, but the quality of those pages need to come from mega sites like Yahoo! and MSN, and by using those sites as your main link pages, you would only need five or six inbound links from them to rank your page on the top 20. But if you can get up to 5,000 links from less important sites, that will work as well, even if the pages you link from are online diaries, blogs, zany products, porn sites or anyone else who honors link exchanges. You just have to make sure the huge amount of sites you link to are the proper amount. If you’re working on quantity over quality, you must link up to 4,000 less relevant pages at the minimum.

For a good example of overall search engine manipulation, the #1 SEO site today is “Submit Express”, which delivers website submissions to over 75,000 search engines and directories. The company does not care what your business is, they just submit your pages to as many search engines as they can find, just delivering quantity over quality, which might not be right for you. This brings up an earlier point about how your company or blogsite needs a specific internet marketing plan that works for your business.

If your company or site is in the business of consulting, you should never use keyword manipulation to get your business listed in the major search engines because that makes you a bigger target. You don’t want cheap tricks to rise to the top of the search engines in any other way but the most legitimate so you don’t get scorned by your industry when everybody finds out the fraudulent or cheap ways your marketing consultant got you the #5 spot on Google.

But if you could care less about how people think you clawed your way to the top, another way of linking techniques that work is by “cloaking” your pages by hiding text in the background of your site in a way that users won’t see the text, but that specific text you used will target Google’s ranking technology, allowing your pages to rank right up there with the big boys in the Top Ten rankings. As you can see, there are a myriad of ways for you to manipulate your way to the top of the search engine heap. Just make sure you pick the right way in doing so.

2. USE THE BEST TITLE TAG POSSIBLE FOR YOUR HTML WEBSITE PAGE People do not realize how important it is to create a unique phrase embedded in the HTML code for your title tag on the front page of your site. A really good example of the perfect title tag would be: (SEO Gone Nuts – microsaw.com). What this title tag does is two-fold. It uses the term “SEO” which is a very popular keyword on the web, and then it has “Gone Nuts” within the tag line which is an active term and may be very unique from a search engine point of view if no other site uses that term with SEO in the main title.

To come up with a perfect tag title for your site, you need to visualize what main keyword phrase or term a web surfer looking for your company or blog would put in to locate your site. Let’s say you sell “Star Wars” paraphernalia for instance. Your tag could then be (Star Wars Lucas Insane- stargear.com).
Now calling George Lucas insane might not be appropriate, but you get the picture. Any term or keyword you can use that will be very original for that very important spider crawl from Yahoo! or Google, will make the difference between ranking #3 on their pages or #25,000th. You make the call.

3. RESEARCH YOUR MAIN COMPETITION The best way to keep in competition with companies or blog sites that are in your main line of business, is to find out how they are being so successful with their own rankings in search engines. How you find out this important information is very easy. Just type in your search term into a main search engine such as Google and then examine the top five or six results. Notice what they are doing in their HTML (on page) and linking areas (off page).

The ways to figure out their HTML coding is by writing down the main keywords you keep seeing over and over on their main page. If they state “star wars” more than 8 times on their home page, for instance, you then know one of the most important keywords that they set up on their site HTML was (STAR WARS). It is that simple. If it worked for them, it will work for you too, so go ahead and add it to your main keywords when you write the text for your main page.

You can do the same thing as far as linking is concerned as well. To find out how many sites are linking to your competition, type “link:[http://www.competitorname.com]” into Google. Do the same in Yahoo!, and you’ll see a higher count because Yahoo! is more all-inclusive. This information will tell you who your site should be linking to, because your competition is already in business with those sites and you should do the same ASAP!

4. RESEARCH YOUR KEYWORDS Using the proper keywords in any page you submit to the various search engines on the internet cannot be overstated in importance. If you can find at least three perfect keywords for your front page, and then use those keywords with a combination of techniques already discussed, you are halfway there to dominate your competition when it comes to a high ranking using search engine optimization. Use tools like “Yahoo! Search Marketing/Overture”, Google’s “Keyword Tool” and “SEOBook” keywords tool as well as any other keyword enhancement tool you can find on the web.

When you go to one Google’s keyword tool for example, and put in “Star Wars”, you will see that the keyword “Star Wars toys” is the #1 ranking on Google’s search engine. That means that more web surfers used the total phrase “Star Wars toys” when searching online for anything related to “Star Wars” more than any other term. Now going down the list we see “”battlefront Star Wars” as the next most popular term. Write that one down as well. This ranking will change weekly, so make sure you analyze the top five keyword search rankings on ALL of the keyword help web sites for determining your main three keywords you will use for your main page.

Remember to try to shoot for keywords that have higher search counts; over 20,000 searches for your keyword are good, but it all depends on the industry your company or blog site pertains to. If you want to appeal to a smaller group of rabid fans of anime, for instance, you would want to look for a keyword that is very descriptive of your website, but that is not necessarily the most popular. (anime clips) would be a great keyword to use because it ranks 20th down from the top in overall keyword rankings on Google’s keyword tool.

That particular keyword will appeal to all of the many maniacal anime fans who want to specifically watch clips of anime on your site. But you MUST have a good selection of clips to show to your visitors or they will get turned off to your site and never return. So remember to only use the keywords that relate specifically to information or content to your site for keyword relevance to work best for you.

5. ALWAYS USE WELL-DEFINED NAVIGATION ON YOUR MAIN PAGE This also includes the importance of making sure that your directories and file names are well-defined along with your overall navigation structure of your main page. You must name your keywords in the file name (ex: content-management-system.htm) to make sure the search engines will be able to examine all of your main content when doing a search for ranking placement. This will help you develop a flat directory structure that has no more than three levels so that the spiders and robots crawling through your content will not get lost and leave your site before giving you a higher ranking.

Since this last technique is very technical, you should allow a specialist to do it for you. But you need to make sure that they realize you know the technical specifications of search engine optimization so you’ll get your money’s worth from their service. If they think you are an amateur at SEO, they will take your money and just do a lukewarm job at best, so keep them on their toes with your knowledge of at least the fundamentals of SEO and you will be on your way to getting that much-envied position of the #1 ranking on Google.

Dedicated web hosting service means that they do not compromise the nature of the business and the confidence that they have built or are going to build with their consumers. Having a dedicated server web hosting solution is like printing your own bespoke business cards, in the sense that you are able to personify your business in a polished and corporate nature so that people have confidence in the services that you provide. In this world, it is all about the image that you are able to present to the consumer.

While you have built up a good brand image with your logo, with your packaging, with your website design and with the products that you represent, that can all disappear if you adopt a free hosting solution to set up your business. Nothing says the word ‘cheap’ and a compromised corporate image like that so you need to understand of having your own personal real estate to manage and communicate with your clients. Also, having this enables you to gain a better control of your consumer dealings. The problem with free hosting is that they do not have the tools nor do they have the technological capacity to accommodate all of your needs. For example, online banking, consumer tracking, storage of sensitive date and custom ability options that make your website distinctly yours and your companies is why most business always turn to a dedicated server web hosting solution and turn away from the free options that are all over the internet.

With dedicated hosting, you are able to customise your website down to the T and design it in such a way to attract, retain and build relationships with consumers based on memory. Just take a look at the successful retail websites on the internet and you will see why. Every effort is expended to take advantage of the interactive nature of the internet. When consumers go in, they enter into another world, a shopping emporium that allows them to connect with the products as well as learn more about the services that these business provide.

You are only able to do this with a website that allows you to do so. One of the basic principles of marketing is market segmentation. Matching the right product and services to the right market is critical. This certainly applies to the web design business and industry. There are obviously several market segments in the web design business, let alone the IT business in general. There is on the one hand the lower hand of the market i.e. the discount web design market. This web design market consists primarily of small businesses and one man bands who have either just started their business. We are here talking of companies or individuals who have a limited budget to spend on their web design, so price is definitely an issue. On the other end of the market there are the corporate companies who have the budget but have very different needs in terms of web design. Trying to sell to each one of these web design markets requires a different approach. How do we then sell to corporate companies?

A large and medium business looking for a web design company will probably use similar keywords if they are using search engines. Web design and web site design are the most popular keywords, so go for these in your adwords campaign and search engine optimisation. Corporate web design customers will however expect to find a potential web design supplier whose web site design projects a corporate and professional look.

The supplier’s web design look and feel is therefore a key factor. Afterall and like it or not, first impressions count. What is this corporate web design look and feel? If you are not sure, look at some of the corporate web sites. Look at Nokia’s web site for instance. Professionalism is obvious. Well groomed design, a bit of flash animation, not many colours. Certainly no spelling or design mistakes. The corporate web design requires particular attention to details.

Obviously the products or services on offer through the web design will to a large extent determine this look and feel. Corporate identity and the company’s ‘voice’ needs to come across loud and clear through the web design. Use of colours, logos, trademarks, corporate figures on the web design will usually achieve this corporate look.

Whilst budget and discount web design companies would show their prices on the web site, corporate web sites need not show your web design prices. Remember we are not necessarily selling to a price sensitive audience here. Showing your price on the web site might actually put potential corporate customers off your web design services. Price it too low and your potential corporate customers might think that your web design services are not good enough. You would be surprised by what some companies are wiling to pay or have been charged for web design work. Although your potential customers will want to have an idea of cost from the outset, I would not actually show my price list on my corporate web site.

Once the customer goes past your web site and decides to enquire about your web design services they would expect to be greeted by a professional team. Make sure your sales team, even if it’s just you, come across as being professional. Corporate customers expect to treat with corporate web design companies. These might not necessarily be large companies but professionalism and track record is a must. Telephone manners, the quality, value and timelines of your quotes are crucial. You have no room for error when you are dealing with people who expect to pay for an excellent web design product and service.

The corporate web design market is certainly a lucrative one. If you are used to servicing the discount web design market, you need to think twice and prepare for a different web design package offer. You will need to invest into designing your own web site for a more corporate look and feel. You will also have to look into training your sales staff and your internal communication processes so that you come across as a corporate web design company yourself.

It begins as an idea — a company name, a business venture, a personal project. You research available domain name options, choose the one you want, and finally register it. Or perhaps the perfect domain was in use before, and you register it after it completes the domain deletion cycle.

After going through the selection and registration process and then using the domain to brand your business, do you want to risk losing your domain?

Of course not.

THE LIFE CYCLE OF A DOMAIN NAME

To avoid losing a domain after you’ve registered it, let’s look at the stages that each domain goes through.

It’s available

When you look up the domain in Whois records, it’s available for registration. It may never have been registered before, or it may have already been through one or more domain name cycles.

It’s active

Someone has registered the domain for the current time period. Domains can be registered for a minimum of one year and up to 10 years at a time. Some country-specific domain name extensions (e.g., domains ending in .uk and .au) can be registered for only shorter time periods. When a domain is nearing the end of its active period, an email notification is sent to the address in the record for the domain name registrant.

If the registrant renews the domain before it expires, it stays active. Otherwise, the cycle moves to the next stage.

It’s expired (on hold)

A registrant had the domain name registered but didn’t renew it before the expiry date. The domain name registrar may hold the domain to allow the registrant to re-register it, which would return the domain to active status. This time period is typically 45 days, but it may be longer, shorter, or non-existent, depending on the registrar.

The website and email for the domain might still work for a few days after a domain enters this stage. The domain cannot be transferred to another registrar at this stage, however.

It’s in the Redemption Grace Period (RGP)

The domain is held in a 30-day redemption period, during which the registrant can still re-register it, perhaps with an additional service fee at this point. The website and email for the domain no longer work. However, the domain is not yet available to the public.

It’s pending delete

This registry hold period, the last stage of the cycle, is five days.

It’s available

Anyone can now register the domain name. The cycle can begin again.

THE BENEFITS OF LONG-TERM DOMAIN REGISTRATION

It’s more convenient

When your domain is registered for several years, you only have to renew it once every several years. You also avoid the inconvenience of possibly having your site and email go down if you miss an annual renewal deadline.

It’s less expensive

Some domain name registrars offer a discount when you register a domain for multiple years. In addition, you reduce the number of occasions when you might have to pay a service fee for renewing your domain late.

It’s more secure

The chances of your losing your domain because you were away, busy, or didn’t receive the email notification about its due date are reduced.

It’s more legitimate

It’s believed that Google weighs the length of the domain registration when ranking a website. A site with a domain that’s registered for several years would benefit from the long registration time over a site with a domain that expires in less than a year.

Savvy customers will also notice how long a domain is registered for. A company with a domain that’s registered for a few years is more likely to be around in a few years than one with a domain that’s registered for only one year.

THE MANAGEMENT OF A DOMAIN NAME

To keep your treasured domain name from going through the above cycle after you register it, take these preventive steps:

o Register it for several years at a time.

o Register it with an email address that doesn’t go with the domain name — you need to be able to send and receive email about the domain if you accidentally let it expire.

o Keep the address in your Whois records current so that you can receive renewal notices from your domain name registrar.

o Set up a reminder in your calendar to renew your domain at least two months before its expiry date.

These security steps will help protect your domain name:

o Use a complex password with a combination of letters and numbers for your domain name account.

o Turn on the “lock” feature if the extension allows locking. When a domain name is locked, no changes can be made to it. Some domains (depending on the registrar or extension) can’t be locked, but other security measures are usually in place to prevent unauthorized transfers or other changes.

Search Engine Optimization (SEO) is an interactive internet marketing technique that is applied to drive high traffic to a website without the need to use the Pay Per Click (PPC) methods. The SEO consists of extensive keyword research and site optimization that help the search engines find, index and rank the site. I will illustrate, in this article, the SEO Do’s and Don’t to properly do the optimization without running into the risk of violating the search engine rules and getting penalized. I will use Google as my example since it is very popular. Though, similar guidelines apply as well to the other search engines like yahoo and MSN.

SEO Don’ts

I’ll start first by talking about what to avoid when optimizing your website. You need to be aware of the Black Hat strategies that trick the search engines in order to push the website high in the organic rankings. You want to avoid these strategies if you don’t want to risk being penalized and thrown out of the search engines. These strategies used to work in the past, but not anymore since the Google search algorithms are constantly being updated to detect any links created illegally. A Webmaster guidelines are published by Google to say what you cannot do. I strongly recommend to constantly check them.

SEO Dos

You need to give Google and any other search engines what they are looking for. Always use reputable strong strategies that Google recognizes. The SEO is a great interactive internet marketing technique, however it is an on-going process, and not an event. It is worth the effort because the ROI (Return on Investment) is substantial. The organic conversion rate from SEO can be as high as seven times the rate from PPC. It is therefore profitable since it is much cheaper than PPC.

There are two kinds of SEO optimization: On-site optimization and Off-site optimization.

The SEO On-site optimization consists of going through the website and consistently optimizing it over time with keywords since Google indexes you on those keywords. It requires optimizing key tags like title tag, meta description, meta keywords, heading tags, Alt tags and anchor tags. One thing to keep in mind when updating the website is to balance the keywords against your conversion rates: Balance top ranking against top sales process.

The SEO Off-site optimization consists of going off your website and let Google finds you on high authority, high traffic websites that it scans, mainly the free and paid directories that people are constantly scanning. These directories get you indexed by Google fairly quick. The big ones are yahoo directory and dmoz.org. Next is to keep pushing up the ranking by continuing to develop good inbound links to your website. To do so, go to the search engine friendly directories that drive the website popularity and get links from the websites that have higher authorities and have them linked to yours. But make sure that they are relevant to what you are promoting and selling. Examples are writing blogs, press releases or articles related to your industry or products like the Ezine Articles.

Once you make the choice to go from having your website hosted on a shared server to a dedicated server, it might be a little too much for you to decide which dedicated server to go with. Follow the following tips to learn which dedicated server is right for you.

1. Reliability – There is nothing more annoying, when you are making your living through the internet, than having a server that is down. Down time is money lost, and it is for this reason that I think reliability should be the top priority, when trying to decide which dedicated web hosting server is the best.

2. Consistent equipment updates and upgrades- In the ever-changing world of online services, it is ultra-imperative for you to go with a dedicated web hosting server that keeps up-to-date with those changes. It can be pretty frustrating to find out about the latest web hosting innovations and learn that your host is not updated with the times.

3. Customer Service – Customer service is also one of the most important elements of a quality dedicated web hosting server. You will find, if you do a bit of research online, that most web hosting companies offer dedicated hosting. However, a lot of these companies offer the hosting at rates that many are duped into believing as a great deal. The only reason these companies can offer these deals is because they cut corners in other areas. Most often the customer service is what suffers the most. You may be tempted to go for the low prices, but you must avoid sacrificing the all-important aspect of customer service.
If anything happens to the server, you will be in need of answers, and you need to be confident that someone will be available to provide them to you. Quality customer service is yet another hallmark of the best dedicated web hosting servers.

4. Bandwidth – Bandwidth is what allows customers to visit your site. When you begin to grow in size, you will naturally want to increase bandwidth, and stop sharing your space with other companies. This is also a very important aspect of a great dedicated web hosting server.

When your goal is to make money using the internet, as long as you are taking advantage of the best dedicated web hosting server, then the sky will be the limit for your earning potential.

I would like to explain a few things related to expired domains in a definition format, which should make it easy to understand.

What are expired domains?

Expired domains are domain names that have been registered and the owner has failed to pay to keep the domain. (Many people think that they purchase a domain, but it is more like an exclusive lease. As long as you continue to pay renewal fees, you are the only person that can use this domain.)

What is a typein domain name?

A typein domain is a domain that people often would type into their internet browser. There are two types of typein domains. The first is generic domains, which are generally, generic common words or phrases, people, places, or names (first or last). The second type of typein domain are typo domains. Typo domains are domains that were accidentally typed (mispelled) into the web browser, when a surfer is looking for a website.

What is the wayback archive?

Use the Wayback archive to see how a domain looked in the past, weather it was a developed website, what it was used for, what products were sold there, or what information was provided.

What is linkpop?

Linkpop is the total sum of links on other active websites that are pointing to any web page or domain.

What is overture with the extension?

The overture keyword selector tool shows how many times anyone made a search in one of a few major search engines for the specific domain during the previous month.

What is overture without the extension?

The overture keyword selector tool shows how many times anyone made a search in one of a few major search engines for the specific terms that make up the domain during the previous month.

What is google pr or google pagerank?

Google PageRank performs an objective measurement of the importance of web pages by solving an equation of more than 500 million variables and 2 billion terms. Instead of counting direct links, PageRank interprets a link from Page A to Page B as a vote for Page B by Page A. PageRank then assesses a page’s importance by the number of votes it receives. PageRank also considers the importance of each page that casts a vote, as votes from some pages are considered to have greater value, thus giving the linked page greater value. Important pages receive a higher PageRank and appear at the top of the search results. Google’s technology uses the collective intelligence of the web to determine a page’s importance. There is no human involvement or manipulation of results, which is why users have come to trust Google as a source of objective information untainted by paid placement.

What are alexa ratings?

Alexa.com ranks websites by the amount of visitors (using the alexa toolbar) to a website. The websites are ranked from 1 to about 6 million.
Why are expired domains valuable?

There are thousands of domains expiring each and every day. Many of these domains were purchased which the plan for future development, but were never developed. Even if a domain was never developed, it could still hold some value, based on weather it recieves typein traffic. Some domains were developed, but never became popular, and yet a small percent of expiring domains, were once developed websites recieving hundreds or even thousands of daily visitors. These domains could be expiring due to many different reasons. Some may not be renewed intentionally because the previous owner did not comprehend the value of the traffic, some may have been owned by an incarcerated or deceased individual, some may have been owned by a defunct company, some may have had invalid or outdated contact information. But just because a domain is expiring does not mean that it is worthless. You should fully research these domains either manually by checking the wayback archive to see what the domain was previously used for. Resources that can be beneficial when researching domains are alexa which cannot be relied on by itself, but chances are good that if a domain has overture with the extension, a little linkpop, and an alexa ranking under 500,000, that it should have decent traffic (but we must also remember that not all web surfers have the alexa toolbar installed). Judging the value of expired domains that you plan on registering or bidding for at domain auctions, can be a guessing game. But if you understand the basics of how to the internet works, how sites pass on traffic, and which tools can be used to estimate traffic, and how much advertisers are willing to pay for related targetted traffic, then you can get a pretty good idea of what kind of value to put on a domain prior to owning it.

These tools can all be used to improve your estimate of expected traffic. After using all of the above to research the domain, you should check the accuracy of the linkpop, and also check the estimated traffic of websites that are linking to the expired domain. Once you have made your guess at estimated number of visitors per day the domain should recieve, and figured out what products the visitors are targetted towards, you should then use the Overture Bid Tool to see what advertisers are paying for targetted traffic. Although some traffic converts a lot better than others, until you own the domain, you will never know for sure how many visitors will actually convert to clicks. I normally lowball my estimated click through percentage to 5%.

Example: domain1.com

So let’s say you figure domain1.com recieves 100 unique visitors per day, using an estimated 5% clickthrough rate, gives you 5 clicks per day. The top 3 paying advertisers are paying overture an average of $1.00 per click Most PPC’s recieve 50% of the advertising bid, and split 50% of that with you. Paying you $0.25 per click for this keyword. Here is the most important part of judging the value of a domain. Is the expired domain recieving traffic from mostly incoming links from other websites or mostly from people typing the domain into their browser in search of products. If the domain in question is recieving traffic from mostly links, search engines, and bookmarks, then the traffic could conceivably dry up in a shorter period of time than typein domains. Linkpop domains (previously developed sites) are generally valued at between 18-24 months revenue, and typein domains are generally values at between 36-60 months revenue. The example domain(domain1.com) would then have the following estimated value according to my formula. If it is a linkpop domain: $135-180 If it is a typein domain: $270-450

The above example is based on using a major ppc provider such as domain sponsor or fabulous, but if you have a direct pertnership with google or overture, the domain could yeild a better return and be worth more to you.

All of the above referenced tools and resources are fully explained and discussed

Without good SEO search engine optimization you have little chance of a high listing on the search engines. Search engines such as Google use algorithms to determine the relevance of your web pages and their listing positions, and without an understanding of how to handle them you have little chance of success.

By far the best traffic to get is free traffic, and unless you are expert at using pay per click advertising techniques such as Google AdWords you are liable to spend a fortune trying to make up for your SEO inadequacies. 99% of those that start off full of hope with their online business fail to make any money: largely because they do not know how to promote their website. That is not the only reason, of course, and you don’t always need a website, but if you need one to promote your products or services, then it is imperative that you understand the principles of SEO so as to earn as high a position in the listings as you can.

SEO search engine optimization is how you let the search engines know what each page in your website is about, and also how relevant it is to the search term used (keyword) by anyone seeking information on your niche. It is not enough to have a good looking well designed website with lots of good content on your site. It is essential that manipulate the search engine algorithms to calculate a high degree of relevance of your page to the requirements of those using Google and other search engines to find information.

Algorithms are mathematical formulas and are blind. They cannot see your great graphics and web design. They read the source code of your site, including the text. You can give greater weighting to the important words on your page through proper formatting in order to enable the algorithm to accurately establish the theme of the page.

The spiders that crawl your site should be led to where you want them to go to, and good website design, site navigation and internal linking structure is part of achieving that. It is also a component of your SEO. There is a lot more to SEO than just some H heading tags and keyword meta tags – much more. The majority of people do not understand what SEO is or how to optimize their site, even if learning how to do so could immeasurably improve their chance of online success.

However, learning SEO is more than just reading about it online. You have to see it in action, and fully understand what you are doing when optimizing your website. There are still professionals who believe that you must have 2% – 3% keyword density on your page. They have disagreed with me strongly yet I know that what they say is rubbish: contextual relevance is what search engines are seeking these days, not interminable repetitions of keywords that will achieve nothing but get your site lost in the supplementary results that nobody sees.

There have been a large number of changes in search engine optimization over the last few years, and SEO is no longer what it once was. However, what will never change is the benefit of understanding what you are doing when optimizing your website for search engines.

SEO search engine optimization is the difference between success and failure of your website and possibly even your online business. Don’t just read about it: see it in action and understand it.

The right time to move your web hosting to a dedicated server will depend on several factors such as cost, storage and bandwidth requirements. Dedicated Servers offer a much more superiour means of web hosting as you are guaranteed to only have your own information on your server, this benefits you in two ways, firstly you can be sure that you are responsible for all bandwidth usage meaning that your site’s performance will not be compromised buy other webmaster’s traffic, secondly you can be assured of the security of your site and that you will have a dedicated IP address which will not be compromised by anyone else. Given next are the key aspects that you shiuld keep in mind.

1. Affordability Is moving to a dedicated server affordable, or is the dedicated server you are planning on moving to at the right price for you, also you should bear in mind how much you will be required to pay for an administrator or for a fully managed dedicated server. These can cost quite alot, especially if you do not possess a large budget.

2. Managed or Unmanaged Second aspect to consider is that is do you want or require a managed dedicated server or unmanaged dedicated server. If you are technically adept and know how to manage a server by you can opt for unmanaged server, however if it is not the case then a managed server is the choice.

3. Requirement of additional space and bandwidth How much do you need, most dynamic web sits actually are quite small in terms of disk space, it is generally worth putting the money into bandwidth and data transfer allowance.

4. Presence of Sensitive Files A dedicated SSL and IP address will provide customer with much more security when making transactions on your web site.

5. Requirement of tools and options When you have your own dedicated server you get much greater flexibility in how you configure your web space. There are no restrictions with a dedicated server because it is totally up to you, so you can do whatever you wish to do. The only factor that the user needs to consider not to ignore the increasing budget size.

In this article we will cover the basics of what a domain name is, how they work and why you need to have at least one. I am going to try and avoid complicated computer terms and stick to explanations that should be easily understood by someone without a computer science degree.

What is a Domain Name? Before we can go into what a domain name is I’m going to tell you why we need them as the answers compliment each other. The Internet is just a really big collection of connected computers (a network). For the purpose of explaining domain names you can think of the Internet a bit like the phone system and just like the phone system every computer on the Internet has it’s own phone number except an Internet phone number is called an IP addresses. This address is made up of up to 12 digits in the form 123.123.123.123, computers use these IP addresses to send information to each other over the Internet.

When the Internet was first created it quickly became clear that these IP addresses were not easy to remember and another method was need to make these addresses more human friendly. The solution to this was the Domain Name System (DNS). Basically the DNS is a really really big phone book for computers. When you type a web site address into your web browser it checks the DNS for that website name and finds the IP address. Once it has the IP address it can then send a message to that computer and ask it for the web page you wanted.

Ok so you know a domain name is part of a web site address but which part? Lets look at a website address so we can identify and discuss what bit of it is a domain name.

http://www.itxcel.com/index.html

The above address is the home page of the itXcel web site. It can be split into 3 main parts. The first part is http:// this just tells your web browser what kind of information it is going to get and how to get it. The last part is /index.html this is name of the files on the remote computer that you want your browser to get. The bit in the middle www.itxcel.com is a domain name. This is the name that your computer sends to the DNS to get back the IP address.

So you know what a domain name is and that there is a phone book called the DNS to change your easy to remember domain name into an IP address that you computer can understand. The Internet phone book (DNS) is special in that everyone on the Internet needs to be able to use it. This makes the DNS very very big (100+ million addresses big). Due to the size of this phone book it needed to have a carefully organised and managed structure.

Domain names themselves are split into different levels like a hierarchy. The DNS system uses this hierarchy to search the DNS for the IP address of the domain name it is trying to find. The last bit of a domain, in the previous example the com part is called the top level domain. There are a large selection of top level domains like com, net, org and info. There are also very similar endings called country level domains like uk and de. Each of the top level and country level domains are managed by a different organization, sometimes these are companies or non profit organizations and sometimes governments. In the domain business these organisations are referred to as the registries. Each registry looks after it’s own part of the domain name system.

If you decide you want to use a domain name in the top level domain com, like mycompany.com you would have to have this name assigned by the registry that manages that top level domain (for .com a US company called VeriSign). The process of being assigned a domain name is called domain registration.

Domain registration is more like a lease than a purchase. You are renting the second level domain (the mycompany bit) from Verisign for a specific amount of time normally between 1 and 10 years at a time. Most of the organizations that allow you to register a second level domain charge a fee for each year that you register the domain for. With almost all domain names you are also given the option to renew your registration (lease) when it is close to running out (expiring).

Once you have registered a second level domain you are free to create as many third level domains (sometimes called sub domains) as you like. In our previous example the www is a sub domain of itxcel.com.

Most of the registries that manage these top level domain names do not allow individuals or businesses to register domains directly with them. To register a domain you need to use a company like itXcel. We act as a registrar and send all the required information and the registration fee to the registry. Registrars are useful as they hide the differences that exist in each of the registries from the customer and provide a simple step by step process for registering a domain. A registrar also allows you to manage and track all your domains from one place rather than having to deal with a different company for each top level domain.

OK so I know what a domain name is, Why do need one? Can you image what a nightmare it would be if you had an email address like myname@123.246.128.255 or a web site address [http://123.246.128.255/?]
These addresses are possible but not very easy to remember. Now if you register a domain name you could create an email address like myname@mycompany.com and a web site address like mycompany.com. These are much easier to remember and look 100 times more professional.

One of the important points about registering a domain is that once done you have an exclusive right to use that domain for as long as you keep the domain registered in your name. If you do not renew a domain at the end of it’s registration period it will again become available for registration by someone else. For this reason even if you don’t want or need a web site at the moment, it’s still a good idea to register a domain as soon as possible. Just imagine if your competition registered the domain name of your company or product. Although there is a process in place to retrieve these domain it can be long and complicated. It is definitely simpler to spend a little money up front to secure your chosen domain names.
