HTML is still used. In fact, HTML 5 is in the works. . .
However, the W3C recommendation is XHTML.

How in depth are you planning to go? You really could use word if you like, 2007 isn’t bad but there are definitely much, much better options out there. There isn’t really a need to design a website entirely use html. or source code. Knowing XML (extensible markup language) very well can be very advantageous and make you very marketable though! Which is similar to html in many ways.

You can get Microsoft Visual Studios to create a website as well. With . aspx web forms you have several options as adding link/calculate buttons or drop down menus as well as being able to have tales for things like merchandise and easy reference, just to name a few! (but you will need to know access or visual basic to some extent) They offer a 90 day trial of their 2008 pro version.
Another benefit of asp is that you can still make great use of your html capabilities or, if you want you can stay strictly in design view

There is also Dreamweaver which is very user friendly but I have almost zero experience with it.

Mind you, I have very limited experience as I have only dabbled a bit on my own and taken one web management course (which was entirely about web design either!). But it is fun and you do feel a sense of accomplishment when you create a website and impress friends and family :)

HTML is still using by the majority webmasters — this web page you now looking at (Yahoo Answer) is also built in HTML.

What is true, is that there is rarely any page built using HTML alone. Most website now use a combination of HTML, Flash, PHP, MYSQL database backend etc to make the website content interactive and dynamic for its visitors.

There are people still coding HTML page by hand (using NotePad), but you can consider using easier tools such as Dreamweaver to build your website. You can also build flash site easily by using different flash builder software and tools. PHP is a programming language which does require few months of learning if you have never done programming before.

You can also add video, music, animations etc to your web page. But again these are generally flash addons, which still need HTML code to embed them into a website.

The best way to design a web page is to sign up to a free website builder (do a search in google to find one). After you have built your website use websites such as http://www. codesupplier. com/ to source HTML Codes and simply paste them onto your website. Easy. These days you don’t have to bother knowing all the coding.
