HowTo: Setup Own DNS Name Server in VPS/Dedicated Server with DirectAdmin (tutorial)
If you have vps or dedicated server then it is very easy to run hosting and running your own name servers on it. If you domain name servers are same as your domain name, that would be very professional instead of pointing name server to other web hosts. For example if you have domain name www.musicgk.com and you want to set name servers like ns1.musicgk.com and ns2.musicgk.com
If direct admin or cpanel is included with your vps or dedicated server then it would be much easier for a beginner.
In this tutorial I will tell you step by step about how to setup your nameserver step by step with the help of direct admin. What you will need is vps or dedicated server with at least 256 MB ram and direct admin running with it. Get minimum 2 IP addresses allocate to you else it would not be possible to run DNS nameservers. To run DNS nameservers with 1 IP is possible thing but most of the domain registrars do not allow nameservers with 1 ip so get minimum 2 IPS. Mostly hosts would charge around 1$ or 2$ for single IP per month.
METHOD:
- Login to your direct admin control panel. There go to “user level”. Select “domain management area” and “add domain”.
- There just enter your domain name like yourdomainname.com. Once you will add your domain you will get confirmation message like “your domain has been already setup”
- Now remaining part is setting up your nameservers. For that go to “reseller level” and there you have to select “nameserver management”. Just select 2 IPs and create name server with the domain which you have created in earlier step. Now your name servers will be ns1.yourdomain.com and ns2.yourdomain.com.
Now this step is very most important for you to make your created name servers working.
Note: Just creating name server and enter them into your domain control panel will not work. For make it working properly you have to register your name server with your domain name registrar. After doing this your DNS entry will work else it will give you Error messages.
- So, How to register domain name server with registrar? Here in this tutorial I will let you know how to register your domain name server with Godaddy. If you are using Godaddy go to “domain details”. There go to “domain summary”. There in “View/modify” option you have to register your name servers along with 2 IPs. Enter ns1.yourdomain.com, ns2.yourdomain.com along with 2 ip addresses we have used for our name server.
- Now you are done. You can modify your nameserver in your domain control panel to your newly created nameservers.

What is Domain Name And Domain Name Registration?
What is Domain name?
Domain name identifies one or more ip addresses which are usded in URLs (Uniform Resource Locator) to identify particular web pages.
What is Domain Name Registration?
Domain name registration is procedure to secure or obtain a website domain name, such as www.yourname.com. When you register domain name, you own it for the particular time period (It depends up on the contract for how much period you register your domain. Normally its one year). ICANN (The Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers) handles all the international DNS (domain name server) database. ICANN guarantees that all the registered domain names are unique and mapped (assigned) properly to a unique IP address.
There are many companies available in internet business where you can register your domains, they are called registrar. There are well-known registrars as godaddy and enom. When you apply for any domain to be registered, system checks into DNS database for domain availability. If the domain name is not already registered then it is available for domain registration.
At the time of domain registration process, you will have to provide your contact information which any one can view via WHOIS search engine. If
you do not want any one to view your contact information then you can apply for privacy.
Note: Make sure that you own the domain which you registered as few registrars do not provide you all the control over your domain. Make sure that
you have option to transfer the domain to another registrar when ever you wish.
